What is 360º Feedback?

To help people perform more effectively and exploit their potential, it is important that they understand the impact of their behaviour on others. A 360º feedback process is a survey of people’s perceptions of behaviour at a point in time. The 360º feedback process provides a “full circle” overview of a person’s behaviour in his or her job. It does this by using structured feedback from interested and relevant people who know the person well enough to comment constructively on his or her behaviour. These people are typically drawn from groups such as relevant manager(s), peers/colleagues and direct reports. These respondents will often number 10-12 in total for a typical 360º feedback exercise. Ratings and verbatim comments are gathered and presented in a report which is presented to the participant.

As a participant, 360º from a group of work colleagues can be highly informative. It often presents some pleasant surprises (where people identify their strengths) and some challenges (identifying areas for further development).
